How Does the Walmart Savings Catcher Work?

The WalMart Savings Catcher is a pretty interesting application offered by the world’s largest retailer for Android and iOS smartphones. You can download it at the corresponding app stores and use it to check all of your WalMart purchases for the best possible deals.

How does the WalMart Savings Catcher work?

When you make a purchase at WalMart, you can scan your receipt with your smartphone’s camera as instructed on the app or you can enter the receipt number (TC number) near the bottom. The app will then check a database to compare prices on your receipt with those of nearby competitor’s specials as listed on their websites. If the app finds a qualifying item with a better price from a competitor you are credited the difference to a WalMart Rewards eGift Card or Bluebird by American Express card. The amounts credited on these cards can then only be redeemed at a WalMart store or at WalMart.com.

This is a helpful little app for WalMart to offer, though it might take some time for it to gain any traction. Changing people’s buying habits isn’t easy. And adding something as seemingly easy as a smartphone app that only requires you to scan a receipt or type in a number and wait a few seconds might still be too much to ask of most people.

Personally, I’m always looking for how to save money at WalMart on my purchases, no matter how small. And heavy WalMart shoppers will be hard pressed to find a better or more convenient way to save money than by using the WalMart Savings Catcher.

This is a helpful little app for WalMart to offer, though it might take some time for it to gain any traction. Changing people’s buying habits isn’t easy.

So how does the WalMart Savings Catcher work? Pretty well, but with a few limitations. It’s a great app and will help a lot of people get the most out of their shopping dollar. But there are restrictions that may disappoint some people:

  • You can use it only 7 times per week at the most
  • It does not apply to online purchases
  • It doesn’t work on items that require you purchase one item to get another one at a discounted price (ex: “buy ketchup to get mustard for $1”)
  • Purchases that reward you with a gift card (“buy 36 pack of toilet paper and get a $5 gift card”)
  • BOGO deals where there is no price listed (“buy one jar of horseradish and get one free”)
  • Going out of business sales or closeout prices
  • Percentages off (“Deodorant 35% off”)
  • Deal that requires a competitor’s coupon and imposes a quantity limit (“Hot dogs $0.99 with competitor coupon, limit 2)
  • Receipts older than 7 days are not valid

Here are a few more answers to the question “how does the WalMart Savings Catcher work?” or rather how it doesn’t work. There are many restrictions about which items it applies to. Here are just a few items that don’t qualify, as taken directly from the WalMart website:

General merchandise items including, but not limited to, outdoor living consumables (such as such as fertilizer and bug spray), office supplies, apparel, DVD’s, electronics, CD and gaming media, toys, housewares, small appliances, sporting goods, home décor, bedding, books and magazines, shoes, jewelry, furniture and seasonal products

I had never even HEARD of this! Going to check it out immediately, although it does seem like there are a lot of restrictions, and disappointed that it does not apply to online shopping. But,,,sounds like it just takes a minute and you don’t have anything to lose!
